Cost of Studying in Malaysia for International Students in 2026

Cost of studying in Malaysia for international students, by TJS StudySteps

Studying in Malaysia can be affordable, but tuition is only one part of the total cost. International students also need to plan for the Student Pass, medical insurance, accommodation, food, transport and other university charges.

The short answer

  • A typical bachelor’s degree costs around RM79,559 in total tuition, and most bachelor’s programmes fall between RM50,000 and RM100,000 for the full degree.
  • A typical Foundation programme costs RM22,540 and a Diploma costs RM45,750.
  • First-year Student Pass costs are around RM2,600 to RM3,200.
  • Living costs are estimated at around USD582 per month.
  • Medicine is much more expensive, with typical MBBS tuition around RM419,932.
PART 01

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Malaysia?

There is no single price for studying in Malaysia. The total cost depends on your study level, subject, university and programme duration.

A Business degree can cost much less than Medicine, and the same subject can also have very different fees at different universities. The best way to compare your options is to look at the total tuition for the full programme, not only the first-year fee.

Your overall study budget normally includes university tuition, Student Pass and insurance costs, living expenses, and any additional university charges such as registration, laboratory or examination fees.

PART 02

Tuition Fees in Malaysia by Study Level

The study level has a major effect on how much you will pay. The figures below show total tuition for the complete programme, not annual tuition.

Total tuition for the whole programme, in RM. Source: TJS Studysteps course database, September 2026.
Study Level Lowest Typical Highest
Foundation RM12,000 RM22,540 RM39,628
Diploma RM7,650 RM45,750 RM102,375
Bachelor’s Degree RM29,900 RM79,559 RM734,930
Master’s Degree RM5,500 RM36,205 RM390,824
PhD RM11,000 RM53,760 RM553,400

The “typical” figure is the midpoint, meaning half of the programmes cost less and half cost more. This gives students a more realistic idea of the usual cost than looking only at the cheapest or most expensive programme.

Annual Fee vs Total Programme Fee

Always check what the fee shown by the university actually represents. It may be one semester, one academic year or the entire programme.

For example, if a three-year degree costs RM78,000 in total, that works out to around RM26,000 per year. A university with a lower annual fee can still cost more overall if its programme takes longer.

The most useful number to compare is the total cost from enrolment to graduation.

PART 03

Tuition Fees in Malaysia by Subject

Your field of study can make a big difference to the tuition fee. Programmes that require laboratories, clinical training, specialist equipment or studio facilities usually cost more.

Bachelor’s degrees only. Total tuition for the whole programme, in RM. Source: TJS Studysteps course database, September 2026.
Field Lowest Typical Highest
Medicine (MBBS) RM56,604 RM419,932 RM693,600
Pharmacy RM58,080 RM174,714 RM288,000
Civil Engineering RM56,604 RM106,076 RM259,200
Mechanical Engineering RM56,604 RM98,653 RM259,200
Artificial Intelligence RM56,604 RM95,900 RM171,000
Chemical Engineering RM60,600 RM95,085 RM259,200
Data Science RM56,337 RM94,558 RM181,440
Architecture RM51,620 RM83,540 RM137,688
Accounting & Finance RM43,860 RM81,360 RM192,000
Computer Science & IT RM38,752 RM80,670 RM259,200
Business & Management RM38,756 RM74,600 RM207,360
Education RM43,860 RM72,830 RM208,000

The same subject can still have a very different price depending on the university. Civil Engineering, for example, ranges from RM56,604 to RM259,200. That is why students should compare the exact programme and university rather than choosing based only on the subject name.

How University Choice Changes the Cost

Different Malaysian universities sit at very different tuition levels.

At the more affordable end, typical bachelor’s tuition at institutions such as Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) can fall around RM56,000 to RM65,000.

Another group sits around RM70,000 to RM90,000, including Management & Science University (MSU), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), UCSI University, INTI International University and Multimedia University (MMU).

Universities such as Sunway University, Asia Pacific University (APU), Taylor’s University, Xiamen University Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, University of Nottingham Malaysia and Monash University Malaysia can sit around RM100,000 to RM175,000, depending on the programme.

These are broad university-level ranges, not fixed prices for every course. Always check the fee for the exact programme you plan to study.

Malaysia Student Visa, Medical and Insurance Costs

International students also need to budget for the Student Pass process. These costs are separate from tuition unless the university clearly states otherwise.

Published EMGS fees for a new Student Pass application. Source: EMGS Schedule of Fees v1.6, updated 13 November 2025.
Item Cost
EMGS processing fee RM1,600 + 8% service tax
eVAL processing RM150 + 8% service tax
Medical screening in Malaysia RM250
Medical screening in Sarawak RM350
Medical insurance RM456–RM958 per year
Student Pass sticker RM60
i-Kad RM50
Multiple Entry Visa RM0–RM50, depending on nationality

For the first year, Student Pass-related costs are roughly RM2,600 to RM3,200, depending mainly on the insurance plan chosen. Later years are normally cheaper because the large initial processing fee is not repeated in the same way.

One-Off University Charges (Registration, Deposits and Admin)

Beyond tuition, almost every Malaysian university charges a set of one-off fees at enrolment: application, registration, administrative, library or caution deposits, and in some cases the EMGS and insurance charges bundled in. Across the 37 universities in our database these one-off charges range from RM3,060 to RM21,500, with a typical total of about RM8,900.

Approximate total one-off charges at enrolment, in RM. Source: TJS Studysteps university fee records, September 2026. Some universities include EMGS and insurance in this total; others bill them separately.
University Total One-Off Charges (approx.)
Universiti Malaya (UM) RM3,300
Monash University Malaysia RM3,699
Sunway University RM6,100
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) RM6,200
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) RM6,518
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) RM7,200
Multimedia University (MMU) RM10,100
INTI International University RM10,447
UCSI University RM10,566
Taylor’s University RM11,766
Asia Pacific University (APU) RM11,900
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) RM11,987
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) RM14,601
City University Malaysia RM14,750
SEGi University RM21,500

These charges are paid once, at the start. Two universities with almost identical tuition can still differ by more than RM10,000 here, so always ask for the full fee schedule, not only the tuition line. We check this for you before you accept an offer.

Does the University Fee Include Visa Costs?

Not always. Some universities collect EMGS and visa-related charges together with university fees, while others bill them separately.

When you receive your offer letter or invoice, check whether the amount already includes the Student Pass, insurance and EMGS charges. This helps avoid unexpected costs later.

PART 05

Cost of Living in Malaysia for International Students

Living costs depend more on your lifestyle than your university. A student who shares accommodation, uses public transport and cooks regularly can spend much less than someone living alone and using ride-hailing services every day.

The published estimate for an international student is around USD582 per month. On-campus accommodation is estimated at around USD50 to USD150 per month, while off-campus accommodation is around USD100 to USD300 per month. Utilities are around USD40 to USD65 per month, local meals are around USD1 to USD3, and meals at mid-range restaurants are around USD5 to USD10.

Accommodation Costs in Malaysia

Accommodation is usually one of the biggest monthly expenses for international students. Your rent will depend on whether you live on campus or off campus, whether you share a unit, the area, room type, facilities and distance from the university.

Students living in central Kuala Lumpur will normally have a different budget from students living in campus areas such as Cyberjaya, Nilai or Bandar Sunway. A cheaper room is not always the cheapest option overall if you then spend much more on transport every day.

Food Costs in Malaysia

Malaysia offers many affordable food options, including campus cafeterias, local restaurants and food courts. Local meals are estimated at around USD1 to USD3, while meals at mid-range restaurants are around USD5 to USD10.

Cooking at home can lower your monthly expenses, while frequent delivery orders and restaurant meals can increase the budget quickly. The most useful approach is to plan around your own eating habits rather than using one fixed food budget for every student.

Transport Costs

Malaysia has MRT, LRT, buses, university shuttles and ride-hailing services. Students living close to campus or close to public transport can reduce their monthly expenses significantly.

When choosing accommodation, compare rent and transport together. A slightly more expensive room close to campus may cost less overall than a cheaper room much farther away.

Utilities and Internet

Published estimates place utilities at around USD40 to USD65 per month. Electricity usage can make a noticeable difference, especially if air conditioning is used heavily. If you are renting privately, always ask whether electricity, water and internet are included in the monthly rent.

PART 06

How to Reduce Your Study Costs in Malaysia

The cheapest university is not always the cheapest overall option. A better approach is to compare the full cost of studying from the first semester until graduation.

First, check whether you really need a Foundation programme, because it adds another year of tuition and living expenses. Second, compare the complete programme fee rather than Year 1 only. Third, consider programme duration, because an extra year means another year of accommodation, food, transport and insurance. Fourth, compare public and private universities properly. Finally, check what the tuition fee does not include and ask about scholarships or merit discounts before accepting the offer.

Cost of Studying in Malaysia: Quick Checklist

Before choosing a university, make sure you know:

  • the total tuition for the full programme;
  • whether the fee shown is annual or for the whole degree;
  • how many years the programme takes;
  • whether registration and laboratory charges are included;
  • how much the Student Pass and insurance cost;
  • what accommodation near the university costs;
  • whether scholarships or merit discounts are available;
  • what you realistically expect to spend each month.

Once you know these numbers, comparing universities becomes much easier.
