Since its formation on May 18, 1970, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has succeeded in producing intellectuals and academics who are a source of pride for the country, as well as realizing the aim of its founding fathers to recognize Bahasa Melayu as the language of learning and scholarship.
With just three faculties at first, it has since expanded to include thirteen faculties, two educational centers, thirteen research institutes of excellence, and two businesses, UKM Holdings Sdn. Bhd. and UKM Technology Sdn. Bhd. As a result, it has increased in prominence and size, becoming a research institute that runs several research centers and conducts studies in various subject areas.
Recognizing the shifts occurring in the academic environment, UKM is acting to address them. One way is through e-learning, which uses creative teaching methods and a curriculum that looks forward to helping students prepare for the demands of the current economic conditions. To achieve sustainable development on a national and worldwide scale, it fosters research to address urgent issues and interacts with industry and the community.
UKM was chosen as one of Malaysia’s research institutions in 2006 based on its superiority in the field of research for more than 40 years. The creation of eight niche areas—Cabaran Membina Negara-bangsa, Pembangunan Lestari Wilayah, Tenaga Keterbaharuan, Teknologi Kesihatan & Perubatan, Perubahan Iklim, Nanoteknologi & Bahan Termaju, Kepelbagaian Biologi dalam Pembangunan Bioteknologi dan ICT: Informatik Isian—follows the consolidation of research. On April 29, 2010, UKM was designated as a Self-accrediting Institution. Top-performing universities in this nation have additional authority to conduct their self-evaluations thanks to their self-accreditation status.
With autonomy, UKM will be able to operate more efficiently and will rise to the challenge as it strives for greatness. UKM appreciates and feels lucky to have conquered many challenges throughout its 49 years. The success of UKM in the modern era is the success of all stakeholders. The university values every UKM employee who has contributed to raising UKM’s caliber and extends its gratitude to them all. UKM rewrote its history on May 18, 2020, when celebrated its Golden Jubilee, or 50th anniversary.
