Study in Malaysia for Indian Students: Fees, Visa & Admission Guide 2027

Study in Malaysia for Indian students: fees, visa and admission guide by TJS StudySteps

Thinking about studying in Malaysia after Class 12, or after completing your bachelor’s degree in India?

Summary

Indian students can study in Malaysia by applying to a university that accepts their qualifications, receiving an offer letter and obtaining Student Pass approval through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Tuition depends on the programme and university, while living costs vary by city and accommodation. Students planning to work or study further in India should also check the applicable foreign-degree recognition requirements.

Malaysia offers Indian students a wide range of university programmes, international campuses and English-taught courses, across fields such as engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, business, medicine and hospitality.

This guide covers university options, tuition fees, monthly expenses, Class 12 admission requirements, student visas and degree recognition in India.

1. Why study in Malaysia as an Indian student?

Malaysia is an established higher education destination offering different qualifications, universities and study environments. Here is why Indian students consider it.

International universities

Malaysia hosts international branch campuses of universities from countries including the United Kingdom and Australia. Examples include Monash University Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia and University of Southampton Malaysia.

Students can explore eligible programmes leading to qualifications awarded by these universities while studying in Malaysia.

English-taught courses

English is widely used in Malaysian higher education, particularly in programmes designed for international students. Applicants must still satisfy the English-language requirements of their university and of the student visa process.

Different tuition options

Malaysia has public universities, private universities and international branch campuses. That lets students compare course content, admission requirements, campus locations and tuition fees before deciding.

Familiar food and culture

Malaysia has a long-established Indian community, especially in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Indian restaurants, vegetarian food, cultural events and community spaces are available in many urban areas. Still compare accommodation, travel arrangements and campus facilities when choosing where to live.

2. Is a Malaysian degree recognised in India?

A Malaysian degree may be eligible for recognition and equivalence in India, but recognition is not automatic.

India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced regulations in 2025 governing recognition and equivalence of qualifications obtained from foreign educational institutions. The UGC runs an official online portal for foreign qualification equivalence.

Official website: equivalence.ugc.ac.in

What does the UGC consider?

The equivalence process considers:

  • Recognition and accreditation of the foreign institution
  • Academic programme duration
  • Credit requirements
  • Curriculum and learning outcomes
  • Assessment methods
  • The structure of the qualification

The academic standards of the foreign qualification are compared against the applicable Indian requirements.

Why programme duration matters

Some Malaysian bachelor’s degrees run three years, while certain comparable Indian degrees have different duration and credit requirements. A student planning to study engineering in Malaysia and later seek equivalence in India should check the exact programme structure.

A difference in programme length does not automatically mean equivalence will be refused. The UGC evaluates the relevant academic requirements and may consider permitted variations.

Before enrolling, request the complete programme structure and check the applicable Indian equivalence requirements.

Diploma transfers and franchise degrees

Students considering diploma-to-degree pathways, credit transfers or programmes delivered through multiple institutions should verify the arrangements carefully.

The UGC’s 2025 rules exclude qualifications obtained through franchise arrangements from the general equivalence process. However, not every credit-transfer or recognised collaborative programme is automatically a franchise arrangement.

Ask the institution to confirm who teaches the programme, who awards the degree, and whether the academic arrangement meets the relevant approval requirements.

Medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and architecture

The UGC’s general foreign qualification equivalence regulations do not cover these professional qualifications. Professional recognition is handled under the rules of the relevant Indian regulatory bodies.

Profession Relevant Indian authority
Medicine National Medical Commission (NMC)
Nursing Indian Nursing Council
Pharmacy Pharmacy Council of India
Law Bar Council of India
Architecture Council of Architecture

For regulated professions, check the relevant authority’s requirements before selecting an overseas course.

Important. International rankings and Malaysian accreditation do not, by themselves, guarantee eligibility to practise a regulated profession in India.

4. What are the best courses to study in Malaysia?

Select courses based on your academic interests and intended career path.

Career interest Courses to explore
Technology Computer science, AI, data science, cybersecurity
Engineering Mechanical, civil, electrical, petroleum, mechatronics
Business Management, marketing, accounting, finance
Healthcare Medicine, pharmacy, nursing, biomedical science
Creative careers Graphic design, animation, digital media
Hospitality Hotel management, tourism, culinary arts

For professional fields, also check the requirements of the country where you intend to work.

Our Best Courses to Study in Malaysia guide explains these options in more detail.

5. Admission requirements for Indian students

Malaysian universities accept applications from students holding recognised Indian school and higher education qualifications. Acceptance depends on the institution and the programme.

Can you apply after Class 12?

Yes. Students who completed Class 12 through CBSE, CISCE or a recognised state board may be eligible for undergraduate programmes in Malaysia. The university will review academic qualifications, subjects and grades.

Study area Important admission considerations
Business and management Class 12 results and programme requirements
Computer science Mathematics requirements may apply
Engineering Mathematics and relevant science subjects are commonly required
Pharmacy Chemistry, biology or other required science subjects
Medicine Higher academic thresholds and specific science qualifications
Design and creative arts Academic results and, for some courses, a portfolio

There is no single Class 12 percentage that guarantees admission to every Malaysian university. A student may qualify for one programme but not another because of subject prerequisites or minimum grades.

Do Indian students need IELTS?

Some universities require IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or another accepted English-language qualification. Other evidence of proficiency may be accepted in appropriate circumstances, depending on the university and current EMGS requirements.

Students who studied in English should ask whether their academic background qualifies for an approved English-language exemption.

Do not assume an English-medium school certificate automatically removes the English-language requirement for every course or Student Pass application.

Documents commonly required

  • Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and marksheets
  • Passport and passport photographs
  • English-language proficiency evidence, where applicable
  • Academic transcripts
  • University application forms
  • Additional documents for specialised programmes

Postgraduate students generally need their previous degree certificates, transcripts and any additional documents required by their intended course.

6. Cost of studying in Malaysia for Indian students

The cost depends on the university, qualification level and programme duration. Public universities, private institutions and international branch campuses may have different fee structures.

How to compare tuition fees

When reviewing university fees, ask for the total amount payable for the exact qualification. Check whether a quoted figure covers:

  • One semester
  • One academic year
  • A foundation or diploma programme
  • The complete bachelor’s or postgraduate qualification

A university may advertise an affordable starting price that applies to a foundation programme rather than a full bachelor’s degree. Do not use that figure as the complete cost of your intended degree.

What about fees in Indian rupees?

Indian students can convert Malaysian ringgit into Indian rupees to plan expenses, but exchange rates change. For a reliable estimate:

Estimated INR tuition = confirmed MYR tuition × current MYR to INR exchange rate

Use the latest exchange rate when budgeting or arranging payments. It is better to convert the confirmed fee of your selected programme than to compare unrelated university starting prices.

For more information, read our Cost of Studying in Malaysia guide.

7. Living costs in Malaysia for Indian students

Malaysia offers different living arrangements, from shared student accommodation to private apartments. Your monthly expenses depend on city, accommodation, food choices and lifestyle.

The following is an illustrative student budget for initial planning, not a fixed official price.

Expense Illustrative monthly budget
Accommodation RM 500 to RM 1,000
Food and groceries RM 400 to RM 700
Transport RM 100 to RM 200
Phone and personal expenses RM 200 to RM 400
Estimated monthly total RM 1,200 to RM 2,300

Actual costs may be higher, especially for private accommodation or certain locations. Also budget for deposits, books, insurance, travel and other expenses not included above.

Which Malaysian city should you choose?

City What to expect
Kuala Lumpur A major city with universities, public transport, shopping centres and a wide range of housing options
Cyberjaya A planned technology-oriented area with university campuses and modern residential developments
Penang University options, heritage areas and a different lifestyle from Kuala Lumpur
Bangi and Nilai University-focused areas that may suit students seeking quieter surroundings
Johor Campuses and accommodation options in southern Peninsular Malaysia

Compare costs around your actual campus rather than assuming an entire city is inexpensive.

8. Malaysia student visa for Indian students

Indian students undertaking qualifying higher education programmes in Malaysia generally require a Student Pass. The process is handled through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and the Malaysian immigration authorities.

Step by step

Step What happens
1 Choose your university. Select an appropriate academic programme and confirm admission eligibility
2 Receive an offer letter. Submit your university application and obtain an offer or acceptance letter
3 Apply for Student Pass approval. The application is processed through the EMGS system, with the university handling the required institutional steps
4 Receive your electronic Visa Approval Letter. Once approved by Malaysian Immigration, the eVAL permits you to proceed with the applicable entry arrangements
5 Obtain the required entry visa. Confirm and complete the relevant Malaysian Single-Entry Visa requirements before travelling
6 Travel to Malaysia. Travel after obtaining the necessary approvals and following your university’s arrival instructions
7 Complete post-arrival requirements. Complete the required medical screening and Student Pass endorsement procedures

How long does it take?

EMGS publishes a 14 working day processing charter for complete applications. Processing can take longer if documents are incomplete, or if additional verification and immigration clearance are required.

The overall period from admission application to travel can therefore be significantly longer than the processing charter.

Apply early, and avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements before obtaining the required approvals.

For further information, see our Malaysia Student Visa and EMGS Guide.

9. When can Indian students start university in Malaysia?

Malaysian universities commonly offer multiple intakes through the year. Depending on the course and university, intake periods may include:

  • February or March
  • May
  • July
  • September
  • October or November

Not every programme offers every intake. Medicine, specialised engineering and certain postgraduate programmes may have different application schedules. Check your intended programme’s next available intake before applying.

10. Can Indian students work part-time in Malaysia?

International students at eligible Malaysian higher education institutions may be permitted to work part-time under specific immigration conditions.

EMGS explains that eligible students may work for up to 20 hours per week during semester breaks or holidays exceeding seven days, in permitted sectors and subject to the relevant approvals.

This does not mean international students are generally allowed to work freely throughout the academic semester. Part-time earnings should not be treated as a guaranteed way to fund tuition or living expenses.
