Engineering vs Engineering Technology: What’s the Difference?

When comparing Mechanical Engineering programmes in Malaysia, you’ll see two types of degree:

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) focuses on engineering science, mathematics, analysis and design. It’s the traditional route for students who want to become professional engineers. Examples include UM, UTM, UPM, UKM, USM, UNITEN and Monash.

Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) is more hands-on and application focused, with more practical and industry-based training. Examples include UniKL (from RM78,000) and Lincoln University College (RM56,604).

Some universities also offer shorter Bachelor of Technology degrees, such as KLUST‘s Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Automotive (3 years, RM84,000) and UCSI‘s Bachelor of Digital Mechanical Technology (3 years, RM83,825).

Tip: If you plan to work as a professional engineer, check that your programme is accredited by Malaysia’s Engineering Accreditation Council — see our guide to EAC-accredited Engineering degrees in Malaysia — and ask how it’s recognised in your home country. A TJS StudySteps counsellor can help you confirm this before you apply.

What Does a Mechanical Engineering Degree Look Like?

Mechanical Engineering programmes in Malaysia generally take 4 years. They move from mathematics and engineering science to advanced design and real engineering projects.

The exact curriculum varies by university, but a typical journey may look like this:

Year 1 — Engineering Foundations

Students build strong maths and science skills. Subjects may include Engineering Mathematics, Statics, Engineering Drawing and CAD, Materials Science, Programming for Engineers and Workshop Practice.

Year 2 — Core Mechanical Engineering

Students learn the core of the discipline. Subjects may include Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Manufacturing Processes and Electrical Technology.

Year 3 — Design, Analysis & Industrial Training

Students go deeper into Heat Transfer, Machine Design, Control Systems, Vibrations and Finite Element Analysis. Many programmes include industrial training with engineering companies at this stage.

Year 4 — Specialisation & Final-Year Project

The final year focuses on specialist electives, such as Automotive, Aerospace, Renewable Energy or Advanced Manufacturing, plus a major final-year engineering project and integrated design project.

This is a general example of how a Mechanical Engineering degree may be structured. Subjects, laboratory work, industrial training and the timing of each component vary by university.

ENTRY ROUTES

Entry Routes: How to Get Into Mechanical Engineering in Malaysia

Most international students enter a Mechanical Engineering degree in one of three ways:

  • Foundation in Engineering / Science (1 year) → Bachelor’s degree. Engineering foundation programmes range from approximately RM12,000 (Multimedia University) to RM39,200 (University of Southampton Malaysia).
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering → Bachelor’s degree. There are 17 mechanical, manufacturing, automotive and aircraft diplomas across 11 universities, from approximately RM31,800 (UNITEN) to RM90,975 (MSU). Some universities offer Year 2 entry for diploma holders.
  • Direct entry. Students with A-Levels, STPM, a recognised foundation or an equivalent pre-university qualification may enter Year 1 directly.

General entry requirements: most universities ask for a recognised pre-university qualification with good results in Mathematics and Physics, plus proof of English proficiency such as IELTS or an equivalent test. Exact grades and English scores vary by university and programme — see our guides to entry requirements and English requirements.
